Settling into her second year of death, Alex is ready to explore her limitless mind in an afterworld that changes each day, but she still isn’t resting in peace.

The ‘gifted’ are humans who see spirits and have the same extraordinary mental powers, though they aren’t considered equals. Centuries ago, Alex’s family led the movement to keep the living and dead separated, but the gifted believe Alex is a reincarnation of their slain civil leader. When they begin to break down the barriers that protect the city, the afterworld becomes dangerous and vulnerable to exposure. The living and dead both want to use Alex for their own gain, but what they don’t realize is that neither side will want her when they find out who she really is.

In the afterworld, nothing stays buried for long.

A captivating debut about the fragility of life, love, and perspective.

When Chase dies tragically, Alex embraces her own mortality. What she didn’t expect was that she’d have to make a choice: forget the years of pain and suffering once and for all, or linger as a spirit and get another chance at life and love.

Alex doesn’t hesitate to choose; she’d follow Chase anywhere. But the spirit world is nothing like she expected, and Alex finds she’s forced to fight for her life once more. For even in a world where secrets are buried much deeper than six feet under, a legacy can continue to haunt you—and in a place this dangerous, no one is resting in peace.

| My thoughts |

Rating: 4/5 stars!

First off, those covers! I love the contrasted blue against black and greys.

I think that Rolland did an excellent job of creating a unique story here. I was nearing the end and stopped to tell my boyfriend all about the story.

Then I realized that about 10 minutes had gone by and I was still. Talking…There was way more to this story than I had originally thought. You just get taken away by the story and before you know it, there’s an entire society established.

A huge part of both the first and second book in this series is the love element. But it’s not the cheesy insta-love so many of us are tired of seeing, it’s a love that was created throughout the characters’ short lives. The main character, Alex, has always been glued to Chase’s side (and vice versa, girl power!). So it’s more than a believable love. You’re rooting for both of them through the first and second novels.

Since I read both of these books as part of this review, I might as well talk about both of them.

The first one is more centered on Alex and Chase, while the second is more about the world that they’re a part of.

I really liked this! I never felt bogged down when I was reading these books – sometimes a toughie when reading multiple books in a series in close succession. But I felt like both of these books were really enjoyable, easy (in a good way) reads. We fall in love with the characters in the first book and get a brief, but thorough, introduction into their new world. While there is definitely plenty of information about the spirit realm, you get that warm and fuzzy feeling from hearing the back stories for Alex and Chase’s friendship.

Moving onto Of Delicate Pieces, we get even more feels as Alex and Chase figure out what their relationship really means. We see loads more development into the spirit realm, though. You can tell that Rolland spent a good bit of time imagining this world, as she created an entire society for spirits. And all of it makes sense. I’ve read so many books where the world-building just doesn’t feel authentic. This was definitely not the case with this little gem! Everything about the spirit world is easy to imagine and even raises some questions. Some of the themes and explanations used for the spirit realm just make you think. And I definitely love when a story does that!

Since I deducted one star, I feel it necessary to discuss why. A part of me felt like there wasn’t enough action in this book. Because of this, it almost seems more like a contemporary-genre novel than a paranormal at times. Of course, this isn’t completely a bad thing, but it just took it from AMAZING to ‘I really liked it.’ Of Delicate Pieces didn’t knock me off my feet, but it was absolutely entertaining.

I actually plan on rereading this series – that’s how much I enjoyed these books. If you want a fresh take on ghosts and the afterlife, then you need to give this series a read!

It’s time for a GIVEAWAY!
