Last Minute Camp NaNo Preparations!

Last Minute Camp NaNo Preparations!

This is a super quick update!

I apologize for not providing an additional story for everyone – my internet has been down at my house for a week and I’m actually posting this from work right now (shh…don’t tell anyone!). I feel bad I haven’t posted another story yet, as I heard a lot of people couldn’t wait for the next one. Since life had other plans for me, most likely I’ll be posting snippets as I write for NaNo.

WHICH STARTS TOMORROW!!! EEEKK!

Just to clarify, that was a squeal of excitement. I’m nervous to see how the first week of NaNo goes since I’ve never participated. And I’m going on a vacation this weekend which means I’ll have to catch up on my word count for the days I’m gone :/ I’m not exactly starting off on the right foot.

Writing Exercise: A Love Story

Writing Exercise: A Love Story

Writing Exercise

In my last post I briefly mentioned that I wanted to do some writing exercises to prepare for Camp NaNoWriMo.

I’ve come up with my own goals, not really going off of anything particular that I’ve read before. What I want is simple: to have a better understanding of my characters. And for the first time in a really long time I have let my characters develop for me, rather than forcing them to be something else.

The writing exercise is simple. Tell a story from the point of view of each primary character. It could be a love story (the first one I did), an embarrassing story from their past, the day they met their best friend, or discovered a passion for a hobby. It could literally be anything. Get inspired by something throughout the day and just write about it!

This exercise has given me so much freedom and excitement to discover my characters. Already, my outline has changed for the better because of this. New characters cropped up, and my existing ones showed off their personalities a bit. Read more about Writing Exercise: A Love Story

Preparing for Camp NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo

20 days left until Camp NaNoWriMo!!

This is the very first NaNo related event that I’m participating in and I’m so excited for it to get here! Well…kind of nervous too. And scared. And hopeful.

For those of you who don’t know, Camp NaNoWriMo operates under the same concept as the regularly held NaNoWriMo events. What does this crazy acronym actually stand for? Nation Novel Writing Month, which happens to be in November. The camps are held throughout the year to keep people motivated for the once yearly competition. Write 50,000 words in the course of one month and you can count yourself as a winner of NaNoWriMo!

And I’m beginning my first quest at the next camp event (starting on July 1st).

 How Do I Prepare_

Well, first of all, you need a story. Obvious, I know, but you don’t want to endure writing 50,000 words to find out in the end they’re all crap. Since this is my very first NaNo event I am by no means to be considered an expert. But I think I have a pretty good plan on what I want to accomplish in the coming three weeks.

1. Outline. Some people might not need an outline and can write by the seat of their pants. This is not me. I have attempted several stories in this same manner and always fester out in my passion for completing it. If I don’t have it planned out ahead of time then I get stuck at literally every plot turn. Word production goes down until it stops completely. I save the document, promising to get back to it and I never do. (Sidenote: I never can now. My apartment was broken into a couple years ago and all of my old pieces were saved on the laptop that was stolen. “Vivien, you fool! Why didn’t you back them up on a hard drive??” I did…they took that too.) So it is very very important for me to outline! And save to multiple sources including Dropbox…
